Instructional Approaches

Basic Instruction

This course on Respect in the Workplace was aimed at managers of a large metropolitan hospital. Here is a sample page from one section on Handling Complaints. For a specific procedure such as this, a simple graphic conveys the information quickly and concisely.

For computer technology audiences, we created courses which not only teach software development methodologies such as Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF), but also provide practitioners with a role-based workflow to help transfer training to on-the-job performance.

Here's a screen from an MSF Foundations course which helped upper management introduce the basic concepts of the MSF methodology and explain its decision to change current practices. We also used an innovative text presentation technique that allows text to be displayed dynamically when the learner clicks on each topic, saving valuable screen space.

Here's a screen from the companion course, MSF Immersion, that explains specific roles in the MSF process.

We also develop courses designed to integrate within an organization's Learning Management System (LMS). This is example of an eLearning course developed for the Aspen platform (Click2Learn/SumTotal). The course teaches how to sell solutions at the executive level and was aimed at the sales force of a large telecommunications company.

Knowledge Assessment

We have created pre- and post-tests for many clients, for example as a check for learners to assess their knowledge (pre-test), or as a requirement for passing the course (post-test).

Diagnostic Tests and Customized Course Paths

With pre-testing, we can tailor an elearning solution to include paths through the course that are customized to the diagnosed knowledge gaps of a learner.

This pre-test was developed as a diagnostic test to identify what the student already knows prior to taking the course, and to then create a customized path through the course.  The course was created for a large metropolitan hospital, which wanted learners to focus on new material, or information they did not already have.

Scenario-Based Learning

We have produced “action mazes” for several clients. This is a good example of "active learning." These exercises engage the audience in an interactive story that tests and reinforces their understanding of the material.

Very often, workplace simulations can be effective and engaging without involving high-end multimedia. Here is an example of an office simulation we did for training Branch Office Managers.

Toolkits and Knowledge Bases

Not all eLearning needs to be presented in the form of a course. We begin by identifying the process (work flows) employees must follow, then create a web-based toolkit that provides them with the precise knowledge and tools (templates, tools, how to's, tips, best practices, etc.) they need in the context of their actual jobs. This no-nonsense approach, available at the point at which the employee needs it most, provides more concentrated learning than is possible with any other method.
